Cat Shelter

As most of my readers know, I love animals. I have two outside cats, Little Girl and Peaches that I try to keep warm each warm. I can't bring them in because: 1) I have 7 inside already and 2) They are 80% feral. Little Girl is ten and just started to let other people pet her! I normally put a cardboard box on the porch with some old towels or a blanket in it. Not the best thing, but I figured it was better than nothing. Well, during the summer I came across a website about a animal rescue in Kentucky. The shelter is made of two tote boxes (one inside the other) with insulation board around it. It didn't have room for any on top of the inner box so I put newspapers on top. Finish it off with straw inside. The girls love it!

Editted to add: I got the idea from Holly's Place in Lawanceburg, KY. The website on how to make the shelter is: http://www.hollys.org/ferals.html

I like the tote inside the tote idea!! Is that for more insulation? I did mine with only one tote and straw. Luckily, our winters aren't too harsh, but they are still very cold. We rarely ever get snow, thank goodness!

Yes, it's so the cats won't get to the insoluation. THey are in one tote and the insolation board is inbetween the totes. I thought this is what you did too. I'm adding a link to show where I got the idea. http://www.hollys.org/ferals.html

I saw someone also post the idea to use the styrofoam coolers you see at Walmart (under $10 I think). Just cut a hole in one side and put some blankets/bedding in there. I dont know if the cats would try to eat the foam or not though. Your totes look really cozy and nice!

Thanks, Sarah! I like these because they should last for years. All I should need to do is put in fresh straw every now and then. Never heard of the styrofoam cooler kind before, but it should work as long as the cats don't scratch on them and tear them up. I could see my cats using them for a scratching post!
